User experience design shapes how a person completes a task; user interface design shapes the controls, layout and visual language they use along the way. They overlap, but neither is simply decoration. Good design reduces uncertainty, supports accessibility and makes business rules understandable.

Four principles to keep the work grounded

Understand the task before the screen

Begin with users, goals, constraints and real workflows. Interview stakeholders, review support questions, observe existing processes and identify where people hesitate, abandon or create errors.

A clear problem statement should describe who is affected, what they are trying to accomplish and why the current experience is insufficient. Starting with preferred colours or components skips the hardest work.

Map journeys and information

Document the steps, decisions, inputs and outcomes in important journeys. Then organize information so labels match user language and related choices appear together.

Navigation should expose the most important destinations without presenting every option at once. Card sorting, content inventories and simple tree tests can reveal whether the structure is understandable before visual design begins.

Prototype interactions

Use low-fidelity wireframes to test sequence, hierarchy and content needs. Move to interactive prototypes when behaviour, validation, responsive states or handoffs need to be explored.

Include empty, loading, success, error, permission and edge-case states. A polished happy path is not a complete interface.

Build an accessible visual system

Typography, colour, spacing, focus indicators, controls and motion should work as a system. Contrast, target size, keyboard operation, readable labels and predictable behaviour must be considered from the first component.

A design system is valuable when it documents usage and reduces inconsistency. It should not force every problem into the same component.

Test, measure and improve

Test with representative tasks, not questions such as whether someone likes the design. Observe completion, errors, hesitation and comprehension. Include people using keyboards, zoom, screen readers or small screens where relevant.

After launch, combine qualitative feedback with behavioural and business data. Improve the points that prevent task completion instead of redesigning for novelty.

How long should this work take?

Timing depends on the size of the website, the quality of existing information, approval availability and technical dependencies. Begin with a defined audit or discovery phase, then estimate implementation from evidence.

Can this be handled in-house?

Often yes. The deciding factors are access, skill, time and ownership. External support is most useful when the team needs specialist review, an independent plan or implementation capacity.

How should results be measured?

Choose measures connected to the page purpose and business outcome. Record a baseline, annotate changes and review both quantitative results and the quality of enquiries or completed tasks.

What should be avoided?

Avoid shortcuts that create misleading claims, inaccessible experiences, duplicated pages, hidden dependencies or tactics that cannot be maintained. Sustainable work should remain understandable after launch.
